Shooting
^bj^l FRAMING
(Cont. from page 1)
while they were in Toronto for Le
Fort's surgery. Isamu had always
been a contented, happy-go-lucky
child, she said, "but now he's a lot
more serious than he should be. He
worries about his parents.” ’
LeFort and Yano said they used to
be a sociable couple who enjoyed
visiting with friends, playing sports,
dining out, dancing and going to
movies.
"We don't do that any more,”
Yano said. "A few friends drop by
occasionally, but that's all.”
She said LeForte can only eat ex
tremely soft foods because he can't
chew, a problem that will be rectified
by future surgery, but now makes it
difficult to dine out. He has also lost
a lot of weight and is frail from the
last round of surgery, which required
bone grafts from his arm, so vigorous
activities are out, she said.
She said her husband, an outgoing,
sociable person before the shooting,
is less comforable in public now —
and only started going out alone
three weeks ago.
LeFort said the incident has made
him more wary of people and con
cerned about safety. He's consider
ing taking self-defence courses, he
said. “It makes you want to protect
yourself.”
The shooting also caused serious
financial problems for the couple,
who said that besides several thousand dollars in donations from sym
pathetic members of the public, their
only income has been $8 a day from
the Workers' Compensation Board.
LeFort and Yano said they think the
sum is far below what they should be
getting and will be fighting for more.
But Yano said they have been too
concerned and burnt out by the rest
of the problems they've faced to
fight very hard so far.
Compensation in such cases is
based on 75 per cent of gross income, tax-free, which amounts to
about 82 per cent of Income.
Yano said that based on LeFort's.
income as manager of the valetparking company, she estimates
they should be getting $1,200 to
$1,400a month instead of the approximate $240 they are now receiving.
Alistair Gordon, WCB director of
community relations, said the WCB
has requested more information
from LeFort prior to evaluating his
compensation file.
"We asked him for more informa
tion. As soon as we get that there will
be a rate review,” Gordon said.
Asked if the review would'result
in increased payments to LeFort,
Gordon replied: “That's my under
standing, provided he can substan
tiate income.”
Yano said she hasn't got a job
because at the wages she would
earn, she wouldn't be any further
ahead, considering her husband and
son both need care.
LeFort was blasted in the face at
close range with a sawed-off Shot
gun just outside Systems night club
at 350 Richards on Aug. 7.
Police believe he was shot in a
case of mistaken identity, that he ,
was hit instead of a doorman who
has previously refused admission to
four men and two women who didn't
conform to the dress code. A man
later went to the club and shot
Lefort.
.
Van My Cao, 27, has been charged
with attempted murder in connection
with the shooting.
