the old folks told us the coming of

The living conditions were severe

Like most ghost towns in British
Columbia and in the American Rock
ies, a few remained after the gold, sil
ver or copper had run out or the
prices had dropped. In Greenwood,
the old folks told us the coming of
the Japanese and Japanese Cana
dians was a life saver for the cummunity' There was an immediate in
flux of some 2,000 people. Many
went to build roads — a situation
that prevailed at other Japanese Ca
nadian camps in the interior.' Some
repaired the old buildings in town to
house the rest of the families who
were to follow.
The living conditions were severe
— how severe can be gleaned from .
the captions to photos on exhibit at
this museum. Unlike Poston, Manzanar and any of the U.S.-style concen
tration camps, Greenwood was not a
barrack town. (Of course,' Canada
had some tent cities and barrack
camps.) As for security, the RCMP

she noticed a car pulling into
the driveway. Seconds later a
police.car drove up behind.
Sgt. Dennis Lannon said
the shootout followed reports
of a robbery at a beer and
wine store at the nearby El
dorado Motor Hotel at 2330
Kingsway.
Charged with two counts
of robbery and one count of
use of a firearm in the com
mission of the offence, is
Dean Scott Watson, 22 of Sur

This is an introduction to Japan

Coke boxes. One by one, as I started
talking about the issue, they stood
up and walked away,” Tamayose
said, laughing as he recalled their
reaction.
Movement needed Issei
Nitwatskino reluctantly agreed to
display one of artist Linda Ohama's
prints. On his second visit, Nitwat
skino's wife Kay said the print sent
“shivers down her spine,” Tamayose
recalled.
Like many other Issei, the first
generation of Japanese Canadians,
they simply wanted to forget the
humiliation of internment. But in
order to have support from all
generations, the redress movement
needed the Issei behind them, he
said.
“It took about a year and a half un
til they started really supporting the
issue. At first, they felt I was in
truding on their private lives,” he
said.
But with more contact, the older
generation began to open up about
the lost years. Tamayose said that
. at times it was like a “group therapy”
session as up to 30 Issei at a time
told their stories.
When the federal government an
nounced a $300-million redress
package Sept. 22, the recognition
of that wartime injustice finally
seemed fulfilled.
But that was only the beginning.
The administrative work to ensure an
estimated 12,000 surviving Japanese
Canadian internees received applica
tion forms for individual compensa
tion, pardons and citizenship had to
be done.
And Tamayose is the administra
tive quarterback. From the basement
office of his Richmond home, Tama
yose will oversee the 30 staff mem
bers hired in more than 15 offices
across the country.
First-year costs‘$Tmillion
Three offices have already opened
in Vancouver as well as others in
Kelowna, Vernon, Kamloops and Vic
toria.
Funded by the federal secretary of
state, the NAJC application offices
will cost approximately $1 million to
operate the first year. After the initial
burst of applications are processed
within six to eight months, only three
regional offices in Vancouver, Winni
peg and Toronto will remain open,
Tamayose said.
Eligible for individual tax-free pay
ments of $21,000 is anyone of Japa
nese ancestry who:
• Was a British subject, Canadian
citizen or landed immigrant of Cana
da between Dec. 7, 1941, and March
31, 1949; and
• Was relocated or interned within
Canada, deported from Canada, re
patriated to Japan, deprived of pro
perty or otherwise deprived of the
full enjoyment of fundamental rights
and freedoms by actions of the
federal government under the War
Measures Act, the National Emer
gency Transitional Powers Act, or
other related transitional legislation
made thereunder, solely because
he or she was of Japanese ancestry
(which includes persons wholly or
partly of such ancestry); and
• Was alive at 11 a.m. EST on Sept.
