Approximately 10,000 tomatoes, which grew from just two tomato
plants with some help from the latest biotechnology, fills a 54-squaremeter greenhouse at the Municipal Flower and Greenery Garden
Park in Fukuoka City. The tomato plants are growing in two separate
tanks containing water, fertilizer and other chemicals. The greenhouse
is kept at a temperature of 76 degrees during the daytime and 58
degrees at night. It took about 20 days for the plants to bear fruitthree times faster than plants cultivated in the ground.

SHOP SMART
IT PAYS!
WHATEVER YOU PURCHASE IN THE MARKETPLACE,
BE AN INFORMED CONSUMER.

In Ontario consumers have a
large selection of goods and services
to choose from. And as choices in the
marketplace increase, so does the
need to be better informed.
Ontario has many laws, including
a consumer protection act, to help
ensure you are treated fairly.
Yet, good consumer protection
legislation must be balanced with
individual responsibility.
Many people do not consider
shopping an acquired skill. But, you

can be an informed consumer by
always asking the right questions,
comparison shopping and studying
contracts before signing.
Make sure you know the cost of
credit; find out the store’s refund and
exchange policy before you buy;
check the product’s warranty policy;
and get written estimates for car
repairs.

Consumer rights and consumer
responsibilities go together to make
an informed consumer.
