First solo sailor of Pacific off again
OSAKA. — Yachtman-adventurer Kenichi
Horie, 50, is seen at the helm of his 2.8-meter
single-mast yacht “Mermaid” during a recent
test voyage in Osaka Bay off Nishinomiya

City, Hyogo Prefecture. Horie, who became
the first person in the world to sail across

the Pacific alone on a yacht in 1962, will
challenge the same expanse in the smallest
vessel ever to attempt the crossing. He set
sail from San Francisco on April 15. The
adventurer supported by Asahi Shimbun is
expected to complete his journey in Nishi
nomiya in late July.

Canada to host 8th World Kendo
Championship in Toronto—June, 1991
TORONTO. — The Cana
dian Kendo Federation, with
21 affiliated clubs across
Canada, has succeeded in its
bid to bring the Eighth World
Kendo Championship to Tor
onto in June, 1991.

Kendo (the way of the
sword) is Japanese fencing,
a centuries old martial art
with enthusiasts in about 30
countries around the world.
The World Kendo Champion
ships are held every three
years. Team Canada has per
formed well, winning silver
medals in 1973 and 1976 and
bronze medals in 1985 and
1988.
Negotiations were made
for the University of Tor
onto's Varsity Arena as the
site of the 1991 Champion
ships. Accommodations for
approximately 450 competi
tors and 60 officials were
arranged on campus (Victoria
and New Colleges) and a
nearby hotel. When President
Roy Asa of the Canadian Ken
do Federation made his final
presentation to the Interna
tional Kendo Federation dur

ing the 1988 W.K.C. in Seoul,
he received unanimous ap
proval for Toronto to host
the Eighth W.K.C.
