Jpnz. flocking to P.E.I.
for Anne of Green Gables
By STEVE MACLEOD
CAVENDISH, P E I. — Like
a pilgrim before a shrine,
the young Japanese woman
kneels reverently on the lawn
at Green Gables, her hands
buried wrist-deep in a flower
bed.
As her husband watches
sheepishly, the woman
scoops moist, red soil into
a plastic bag. Then they hurry
to their car, giggling like tipsy
cat burglars.
Reiko Fujiko has seen it all
before.
“Once a man put some soil
in an empty film container
and then asked me where he
should hide it,” says the
tour guide for Prince Edward
Island's Tourism Depart
ment, who was raised in Ja
pan and came to. Canada six
years ago.
“ I don' 11hi nk it' s i I legal to
smuggle dirt.”
“Once in their lives, all Ja
panese women hope to come
to Prince Edward Island,”
says Fujiko, the Island tour
guide. “It's like a mecca to
them. It's a fantasyland.”
Perhaps it will be if the
practice catches on. A grow
ing number of Japanese are
willing to travel half way
around the world to appease
their literary curiosity.
-The lure is> Anne. Shirley,
the\ flame-hai red heroihe of
Anne of Green Gables and
seven other novels by Lucy
Maud Montgomery, the first
lady of Island letters.
Since the mid-1970s, thou
sands of Anne-struck Japa
nese have made the trek to
Green Gables. The white-andgreen farmhouse, the heart of
Montgomery's novel, is in
the village of Cavendish, part
of Prince Edward Island Na
tional Park on the Island's
north shore.
Nobody knows exactly how
many Japanese tourists have
visited Prince Edward island.
Lloyd McKenna, head of Ja
panese marketing for P.E.I.
government, says an informal
survey of Island guest-books
revealed that about 5,000 vis
ited the province of 128,000
last summer.
“Give or take a million,” he
says with a chuckle.
The seed of this unlikely
migration began in Japan
shortly before World War II
when a Canadian missionary
gave an English version of
Anne of Green Gables to a
Japanese friend.
The story of the high-spiri
ted orphan— first published
in 1908 — captivated the
- woman, who began work on a
Japanese translation. In 1953,
she found a publisher and Ja
pan's love for Anne began.
The book is recommended
reading for all Japanese
schoolgirls.
A $37-millidn
park — with Anne as the cen
tral theme — will open in the

northern island of Hokkaido
in 1991.
Kiyomi Sukegawa, a direc
tor for NHK, the Japan Broad
casting Corp., says Japan
ese women are attracted to
Anne's fiery spirit and her
love for nature and open
spaces.
“This kind of lifestyle ap
peals to the Japanese be
cause we've lost that feel
ing,” she says through an
interpreter during a visit to
the Island. “Here in Prince
Edward Island people seem
to have kept that lifestyle.”

Chemainus ..
(Cont. from page 1)

Boy Blue, Come Blow Your
Horn,” would come out,
“The sheeps in the middle
(meadow), the cows in the
cona (corn).
Let' s get back to Kashima,
who lectures on Japanese
American humor. It seems
that in a Seattle high school
class the teacher asked:
“Who said, ‘The British are
coming, the British are com
ing?’ Only Johnny Kobayashi
raised his hand.
“Paul Revere,” the Yonsei
lad replied.
“Correct,” said the teach
er. “Now, for the next ques
tion: Who said ‘Give me liber
ty or give me death’?”
Again only Kobayashi knew
the a n swer: Pat ri c k H e n ry.
“Right,” said the teacher.
“Now, why is it that out of
this whole class, none of the
rest of you knows any of the
answers?”
From the back of the room
came
a muffled
voice,
“Damned Jap.”
“Who said that?” the
teacher demanded angrily.
Kobayashi raised his hand
again and said, “Gen. John
L. Dewitt.”
I like this version better
than the earlier one, which
has the muffled voice in the
back of the room saying:
“Lee lacocca.”

Rating system indicative
of a deeper problem
By JOE SOONG
We might think we are fighting for
the right to be judged on non-racial
criteria, but many of us are judging
ourselves by the same standards we
are fighting, against. The following
exchange between two Asian Amer
ican males is a common example:
John: Wow! That girl is really cute!
I'd give her an 8.5.
Dick: Is that, on an Asian scale or
on the regular scale?
John: What's the difference?
Dick: Well the Asian scale is lower
than the regular scale. For example,
a cute Asian gal who rated a 7 on the
Asian scale would probably rate
about a 6 on the normal scale.
John: Oh.
Dick: Yeah, Asian women are cute
but they don't match up in some
areas! (Dick laughs.)
-

Parents can shape how a child for
mulates his opinion of himself and
of the world around him.
As the experiences of childhood
make us aware of our background,
the experiences that later follow help
us understand our background. This
is where the various ethnic organi
zations become important. These
groups become the anchors that
keep us from drifting away from our
origins. The organizations are a
cementing bond for people located
in areas where there are concentra
tions of individuals of similar back
grounds.
They are especial ly i mportant for
the people in areas where specific .
ethnic groups are not so well rep
resented. However, if the past is any
indication, the more integrated a
group becomes, the more diffuse the
group will become and cultural in
fluences will proportionally diminish.
So, what is the point of this com
mentary? The reality is that later
generations will continue to intergrate into American society. We will
absorb its values, which will lead to
a dilutiuon of any cultural influences.
But that doesn't mean an apprecia
tion and understanding of our spe
cial backgrounds can't develop, and
zgrow. We must work to make sure
our culture stays alive and well. Our
uniqueness is special and it would
be a shame to lose it.

I don't think a lot of women are
aware of it, but many Asian men use
a double standard in how they see
women. On the surface, this practice
is innocent enough, but the underly
ing causes are more serious.
