that she is 93 years old and
came to Canada on the same

Mrs. June Tanaka as Miss

was the first class she had

she was inwardly quite' inti

the Keiyu-kai members retained
the facility to speak Japanese so
well after so many years.
Many of the members of
Toronto’s harmonica band are
from Keiyu-kai so the reunion

Koka (school song) and Hotaruno-hikari. Keiyu in kanji is written
“hotaru” and “tomb” or friend. As
Mr. Sato explained in 1939, Kei
was taken from the story of a
poor man in China named “Shain” who was unable to buy oil for
his lamp so he gathered “hotaru”
(firefly) in order to supply suffici
ent light to study during the
night. Although the melody of
Hotaru-no-hikari is Auld Lang

his mother at age 94 is still very
active. Mrs. Kagawa responded
that she is 93 years old and
came to Canada on the same
boat as Mikio’s mother and rec
alled how many days it took for
them to cross the Pacific on a
comparatively small boat.
Mrs. June Tanaka as Miss
Hirai recalled how she was
recruited by Mr. T. Sato to teach
grade 1 at the age of 18 to re
place Mrs. Hirabayashi who was
leaving for Toronto. Keiyu-kai
was the first class she had
taught and as a novice teacher,
she was inwardly quite' inti
dated by the class? All teachers
present must have been pleas
antly surprised that so many of
the Keiyu-kai members retained
the facility to speak Japanese so
well after so many years.
Many of the members of
Toronto’s harmonica band are
from Keiyu-kai so the reunion
was livened by their accompani
ment while everyone sang the
Koka (school song) and Hotaruno-hikari. Keiyu in kanji is written
“hotaru” and “tomb” or friend. As
Mr. Sato explained in 1939, Kei
was taken from the story of a
poor man in China named “Shain” who was unable to buy oil for
his lamp so he gathered “hotaru”
(firefly) in order to supply suffici
ent light to study during the
night. Although the melody of
Hotaru-no-hikari is Auld Lang
Syne, the lyrics are. reminiscent
of scholarly pursuits, based on
the legend of. the Chinese scho

apparent that Hptaru-no-kikari
