Golf for work keeps
Tokyo’s driving ranges
open 24-hours daily
By MASAKI ITAGAKI
TOKYO — Many salaried work
ers in the Tokyo area play or
practice golf at midnight during
the workweek.
Their behavior reflects not
only spreading golf fever but also
growing pressure to play with
business associates on Sun
days, holidays and other days
employees would normally have
to themselves, because such in
teraction may lead to promotion.
In addition, golfing on week
ends is too expensive for the av
erage salaried worker to enjoy
when not on a corporate budget,
particularly in urban districts.
There are several around-theclock golf ranges and courses in
the Kanto area, where a crowd
of enthusiastic golfers can be
seen every night.
The Tokyo Sports Center in
Ariake, east of Tokyo, is open 24
hours on Fridays and Saturdays.

He started playing golf three
years ago, joining clients on
weekends while practising after
work or at midnight in Ariake on
the weekends.
“I have to practice hard, because my clients would feel awk- |
ward if I played poorly,” he said.

NEW YORK — Sushi is safe
after all — if you know what to
order.
Last April, a group of New York
doctors turned stomachs with
their published report of a young
man who ate a bright red worm
along with some sushi of an un
known species prepared by his
girlfriend.
Doctors discovered the worm
during surgery for supposed ap

The report was a bum rap,
sushi defenders complain in a
recent issue of the New England

ished the original appetite-killing
item. Unlike amateurs, they say,

Sushi is most commonly
made of maduro, or bluefin or
yellowfin tuna, shira magura, or
