posed monument to Japanese
American combat veterans of
World War II will honor the contri
butions made by the 13,639
combat veterans from the Nikkei
community who served in the
armed forces even as their famil
ies were imprisoned in concen
tration camps.
The memorial, to be included
in the First Street Plaza Project
now being developed, was
backed by the 100th/442nd/MIS
World War II Monument Commit
tee, a joint committee of the
100th/442nd Veterans Associa
tion and the Military Intelligence
Service Club of Southern Cali
fornia.

Plans call for more than
13,000 surnames to be placed in
a dramatic way on the monu
ment. The committee believes
the experience of seeing the.
names “would be for the viewer
the^ ultimate in believing and in
accepting what is: how'history
and reality of what did happen to
the Japanese Americans during
World War II.”

A Yiddish term meaning
broadly, “relative” or an “in
law.” If, for example, your
son, daughter, brother or
sister is married to a person
of the Jewish faith, that
makes you a m'hutin. The
first time I heard the term,
I knew almost instantly that
it was Yiddish. There' s some
thing flavorful about Yiddish
terms that one senes upon
hearing. As for “m'hutin”

the first treaty Indian elected to

Wilton Littlechild told dele

“We have... the best eco

Littlechild said Indians need to

after the Second World War

“If you shoot in the dark, you’ll
