Last surviving JC soldier of World War I dies in Alberta
By TOM MITSUNAGA
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Mr. Tamotsu Mikuriya, No. 697040, the last
surviving member of the Japanese Canadians who fought in the First
World War as a member of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, fought
his last battle for his life at Claresholm Care Centre where he had been
a resident since 1965. He passed away on November 19th at the age of
95 years. Funeral services were held in the Honpa Buddhist Church in
Lethbridge on November 22. The service was attended by about 70
concerned persons from the area. The Lethbridge and District Japanese
Canadian Association was represented by Mas Terakita and Tom Mitsu

naga. Four persons from the Claresholm Care Centre were there as well.
Mr. Mikuriya had been in failing health fora number of years, although
he did manage to come to the Lethbridge Tonari Gumi Seniors Club
whenever he could make it from Claresholm.
Mr. Mikuriya joined the 175th Overseas Battalion in 1916 just three
months after his arrival in Canada. He served in France and Belgium as
a member of the 50th Battalion and was wounded in battle, and in Roy
Ito's book, We Went To War, he saw action at VImy, France. Of the 190

Montreal Issei, 93, honored for outstanding service
MONTREAL. — Mrs. Tsune Ochiai (centre)
honored at the Senior Times Third Anniversary
for “outstanding service to the community and
to Canada”, cuts the cake with help from the
Hon. Monique Vezina, Minister of State for
Seniors, and Consul General Masahiko Iwasaki
on October 21st, 1989.
At 93 years of age, Mrs, Ochiai still is sec
retary of the Issei UCW of the Montreal United
Church and attends JCCCM weekly Drop-in.
She has participated in the JCCCM history pro

ject, and has had her story published in The
Senior Times, and also in a French women's
magazine. Mrs. Ochiai participated in the Ot
tawa Forum in April 1988.
Mrs. Ochiai's grandson, Tom Ochiai, read
her life story as an immigrant and her experi
ences during World War II which brought her
to Montreal. Her son, Mikio Ochiai, translated
into English her thank-you speech which she
gave (without notes) in Japanese.

David Suzuki's 10-part radio series
from Jan. 20 to March 24 on survival
MONTREAL. - What if you
could look into the future and
see your children's world?
And what if that world were
beyond
your
worst
nightmare? That is the world
that scientists say could ex
ist if we continue with
business as usual on this
planet.
Radio Canada International
presents an unprecedented
ten-part series on the global
environment that states
bluntly: It's A Matter Of Sur
vival. The series will be broad
cast around the world by
shortwave each Saturday
from January 20 to March
24, 1990.
Renowned Canadian scien
tist David Suzuki wrote the
series; its executive producer
was Anita Gordon, the Cana
dian Broadcasting Corpora-

tion's
award-winning
science producer. When it
aired on CBC's English na
tional radio network in 1989,
It's A Matter Of Survival was
widely acclaimed in the

press, and CBC received
thousands of letters from
listners who said their lives
were changed by the program
and its message. Radio Cani, (Cont. on page 2)

Alberta expecting to lure
more Japanese tourists
EDMONTON. — Years of work are
paying off for private entrepreneurs
hoping to lure Japanese tourists to
Alberta, the province's tourism
minister says.
In an interview, Don Sparrow said
preparatory work allowed him and 21
business people to visit Japan last
month and cement a deal that will
see Ricoh Co. Ltd. send 2,000
employees to Alberta as a company
bonus and All Nippon Airlines
market a new Western Canada tour
package.
“Their first vice-president is a very
keen skier who's very interested in

Alberta as a winter destination,’’ said
Dagny Alston, Travel Alberta's
associate director of International
sales an promotion. Alston accom
panied sparrow to the Japanese
Association of Travel Agents show in

Tokyo.
In 1988, the Japanese accounted
for the biggest single national group
of tourists visiting Alberta after the
Americans. Statistics show 93,400
Japanese entered the province, out
of a total 1.6 million foreign tourists.
Their spending totaled $47.5 million,
more per capita than any other group
of tourists.

VANCOUVER.
A
Japanese woman who
strangled her two sons and
stabbed her husband before
hanging herself had booked
one-way air fares to Japan for
herself and children shortly
before the slayings.
Fumi yo Takabe, 29, never
picked up her tickets to join
family members in Japan, in
stead her grieving mother
and husband's brother re
cently arrived from Yaman
ashi, Japan, 200 kilometres
west of Tokyo, to make
funeral arrangements.
The family had no relatives
in Canada.
Fumiiyo was “homesick”
and having difficulties being
separated from family mem
bers in Japan, a police
spokesman said.
She had comd to Van
couver two years ago with her
39-year-old husband, Shigeru
and sons, aged six and four.
“There is a strong suspi
cion she had difficulty adjusting culturally and
religiously... We believe she
held her religion very dearly,”
said S. Sgt. Bob Law, who
heads the Vancouver police
major-crime section.

An autopsy indicated
Takabe used a tie or bandage
to strangle her sons Yoshiki
and Hiroki, whose bodies
were found in the living room
of their rented apartment at
1345 Comox.
One of the children's
bodies was on the couch,
while the other was behind a
child's pup tent that ap
peared to be in the process of
being set up in the living
room.
The body of Takabe's hus
band was found stabbed in
the bedroom.
Takabe hanged herself
from the bathroom shower

curtain rod, but police would
not say in what sequence of
events the deaths occurred
— other than Takabe was the
“last” in the tragedy.
Shi geru, who was a chef at
the Naniwa-Ya Japanese Sea
food Restaurant, had landed
immigrant status.
Restaurant
manager
Noriko Tinkler described him
as a quiet, hard-working Bud
dhist. “He was very kind and
happy. A hard-working person
who never talked about any
problems at home.”

Japan's consul-general
Shigenobu Yoshida said the
tragedy surprised and sad
dened members of the Japan
ese community in Vancouver.

“It's very, difficult to
understand,” he said.
‘■Economically this person
was hired by one of the big
gest (Japanese) restaurants
and was well paid, so they
didn't have financial dif
ficulties.”

Lord Roberts Elementary
School
principal
Bev
Underhill said a psychologist
helped counsel students who
knew Yoshiki. The six-yearold boy attended Grade 1.
“We went into the class
and had a session with
students to assist them with
how to deal with feelings of
grief,” said Underhill.
