Police said the couple were attacked after a man broke
into their Sparrow Ct. home in the Hwy. 10-Steeles Avenue
area. Their daughter, 18. who fled to a neighbour's home,
had recently ended a relationship with the suspect, Michael

Vincent Boudreau, 19.
The suspect has been arrested in Kentucky and extra-

dieted to Canada.
John Watanabe suffered massive head wounds while his
wife suffered a fractured skull and face cuts.
She managed to get outside and crawled to a neighbour's
house. Another neighbour phoned police after witness saw
the suspect trying to drag the daughter into his car. The
daughter fought off her attacker and escaped.

daughter dated for a year before breaking up in January.”

Born in Vancouver, Ohashi
moved to Japan in 1938 where
he completed his schooling.
In 1941 he came back to Ca
nada and in 1942 moved to the
Raymond area. He came to
the Taber district in 1947,
where he resided until his
passing.
Ohashi is said to have en
joyed a good joke, and liked
bird and big game hunting
when he had the opportunity.
He is survived by his wife
Hisaye and his mother Ito
Ohashi, both of Taber, two
sisters Kay Tanaka of Edmon
ton and Margaret Sameshima
of Richmond, and two broth
ers Joe of Taber and Ken of
Edmonton.
Funeral services were held
at the Timber Buddhist Church.

M.D. reeve Cecil Weisi,
who worked with Ohashi on
council for a number of years,
described him as a good
councillor who stood up for
his ratepayers.
“He served the M.D. well,”
said Weist. “Mike was always
good for a few laughs.”
M.D. administrator Peter
Shaw also described Ohashi
as a personable man who will
be sadly missed in the com
munity.
“Mike was a good guy,”
said Shaw. “He was devoted.
He did what his ratepayers
wanted him to do, and he was
always approachable.
“People could talk to him
and he did what he could to
help them. We are going to

By GEORGE YOSHINAGA
Anyone who has ever eaten
a Japanese pear knows that it
is much juicier than the Am
erican variety.
It is much crunchier, too.
Of course, in the matter of
sweetness, the American
pear would have an edge.
Why am I talking about Ja
panese pears?
Well, I was just recalling
that prior to his heavyweight
championship bout, Mike Ty
son, in a effort to lose weight,
dieted on Japanese pears,
raw carrots and chicken
soup.
He arrived in Japan at
about 253 pounds and en
tered the ring at 221, which
was three pounds more than
he wanted to fight at.
I think if he eliminated the
Japanese pear, he may have
done a little better with his
weight loss program.
Eating two or three Japan
ese pears is like drinking five
or six glasses of water, Japa
nese pears, you see, is al
most all water, which makes
it so juicy.
Ichi,,ni, san ...
Or did the timekeeper at
the Tyson-Douglas fight yell
out the time in English?
Did this have something to
do with the uproar over the
so-called “long count?”
Seems to me that as long
as both fighters didn't
understand Japanese, they
could have used an English
speaking timekeeper for the
fight instead of Japanese.
He probably was hollering
out, “Whan, tsu, tsulee, fo,
faibu ...”
On top of that, the referee
was a Mexican. So maybe
they should have had a Mex
ican timekeeper counting,
“Uno, dos, tres ..
The bottom line is, why
was it necessary to have a
non-Japanese referee?
When
Muhammud
Ali
fought Joe Frazier in Manila,
guess who the referee was.
That's right, a Japanese.
