Dr. Irene Uchida of
McMaster to lead
Down Syndrome study
By DENISE DAVY
HAMILTON, Ont. McMaster Division of Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals
has been chosen as the only
Canadian centre to partici
pate in the largest study of its
kind on Down's syndrome.
Dr. Irene Uchida, professor
in the departments of
pediatrics and pathology at
McMaster University, is
heading this branch of the
study. She said McMaster
will work with universities in
Michigan, Georgia, Denmark
and England to investigate
the cause of Down's syn
drome.
The work at McMaster will
include 200 families with a

Dr. Uchida is a leading ex

syndrome for more than 30
years. What is known about
the syndrome is that it affects
one child in every 600 or 700
live births and usually occurs
when an extra chromosome
is carried into the egg at fer
tilization. The syndrome got
