Nipponia Home Fund Drive still short of goal
BEAMSVILLE, Ont. — The Nipponia Home Refit Program and the
Building of the Yamaga Wing Fund Drive has reached $376,556, as of
April 12,1990, reports Mr. Yoshiaki Okita, President and Chairman of the

Board of Directors. The goal is $500,000.

,
“We still have a long way to go,” he said recently in the Home s
latest newsletter. “And we are seeking everyone's kind support in con
tinuing the work honoring our founder, Mr. Yasutaro Yamaga.”
President Okita reaffirmed that the new additions are needed to con
tinue bringing comfort to the present and future senior residents of the

Nippinia Home.
A recent appeal letter has invited all those who have already donated
to upgrade their donations. The board has added a special Patron

category for donations of $2,000 or over. Other upgrading categories
include: Gold to Special Patrons ($2,000), Silver to Gold ($1,500), Patron
to Silver ($1,000), Member to Patron ($500), Members ($101 to $499), and
Friends ($100 or less).
All cheques should be made payable to The Nipponia Home Trust
Fund, The Nipponia Home, R. R. 3, Beamsville, Ont. LOR 1B0.
“When I came to Canada in 1964, I was completely ignorant about
the work of Mr. Yamaga, the Nipponia Home and the trauma experienced
by the Japanese Canadians,” said Dr. Okita. But after serving 5 years
on the Home's Board of Directors and learning from the Redress Move
ment, I can truly appreciate Mr. Yamaga's work and the great under
standing and kindness of the JC community

(Edmonton Jpnz. Community
Assoc.)
EDMONTON. - From July
29 to August 4, 30 Japanese
high school students will be
in Edmonton on a cultural ex
change. To be fully immersed
in the Canadian way of life,
these students will live with
host families. We are in great
need for placements. Could
your family or that of your
friends help us out?
The host family must con
sist of at least 2 people and
they must not practise Japan
ese culture in their home.
Families can be traditional
(father, mother, children),
single parents, seniors, etc.
A few highlights of interest

are as follows:
1. Each student must have
his/her own bed but not
necessarily his/her own
room.
2. The host provides meals.
3. The host provides
transportation
to
a
designated meeting place (in
Sherwood Park) Monday to
Friday, by 9 a.m. and picks
him/her up at 4 p.m.
4. The remaining time is
spent with the family in their
daily living situation.

TOKYO.
Defending
champion, Naoya Ogawa,
beat popular diminutive
judoka Toshihiko Koga with
an ippon complete win in the
final April 29 to win the All
Japan Judo Championship
for the second time.

In a clash between the
two 22-year-old champions at
Nihon Budokan Hall, Ogawa,
who stands more than 6 feet
tall and weighs 286 pounds,
took the match from the fivefoot-seven-inch, 165-pound
Koga from the start by cap
italizing on his bulk. Although
Koga, the 156-pound world
champion at last October's
World Championship in the
Yugoslavian capital of Bel
grade, attempted his charac
teristic seoinage over-the-

can get them for five’,” Mc
Cartney recalled.
“So it was very difficult.”
Meanwhile, Jackson bought
the catalogue.

Sam Havadtoy, a spokes
man for Ono, told the New
York Post newspaper recen
tly' the asking price for the
catalogue was actually $50
million, the price Jackson
paid. He said Ono thought
the price was too steep.

“Paul and Yoko may have
had a phone conversation
about the catalog, at which
time she said she wasn't in
terested, but if McCartney
wanted the publishing rights
he could have bought them
himself,” Havadtoy said.

shoulder throw shortly after
three minutes into the 10minute final, Ogawa did not
budge an inch.
After some mid-mat tussl
ing, Ogawa, who had scored
all ippon victories going into
the final, executed a beautiful
ashiguruma leg throw, sen
ding the tired Koga spinning
down on his back at the 7
minute and 13 second mark.
Ogawa, winner of both the
over-95-kg (209 pounds) and
open-weight categories at
Belgrade, told reporters after
the match, “Koga was so
small that I had difficulty
figuring him out. Since the
championship was my first
competition in six months, I
was a little tense at first but
regained my old rhythm from
around the quarterfinals.”

Jack Nicklaus golf
schools open in Jpn.
TOKYO. — Jack Nicklaus
golf schools will open in
Japan soon to help promote
the already popular sport with
more than 15 million amateur
players.
Mitsubishi Corp, and Suntory Co. said they have con
cluded a licensing agreement
with Golden Bear International
Inc., owned by American golf
wizard Jack Nicklaus, to ex
pand into the sports business.
Under the agreement, the
Japanese companies will
establish a nationwide net
work of golf schools using
the teaching methods de
signed by American golf
wizard Jack Nicklaus.
The schools will help
amateur golfers improve their
skills with the aid of com
puter graphics and other
visual equipment, the com
panies said.

Former wife of
Henry Miller
gets suspended
term for drugs
TOKYO. — The former wife
of the late American novelist
Henry Miller received a sus
pended jail tern after her in
dictment on drug charges.
Hoki Tokuda, 56, a Tokyo
bar owner and one-time jazz
entertainer whose real name
is Hiroko Tokuda, volun
teered to be imprisoned after
admitting to charges that she
concealed marijuana in her
home. The court recently
gave her a six-month jail
sentence, suspended for two
years.
Tokuda was arrested Feb.
25 for having 0.66 grams of
hashish at her condominium
in Tokyo.
She reportedly claimed the
substance was given to her
as a wrapped souvenir by a
Malaysian employee at her
bar, and that she learned of
its contents when she un
wrapped the gift after return
ing home.
She told the court she took
the drug twice but did not
become addicted. News
reports had treated her as a
narcotics addict, damaging

her reputation and business,
she said.
“I would rather be jailed
than forced to continue to sit
on a thorny mat,” Tokuda
said.
Tokuda operates the Tropic
of Cancer bar, named after a
novel by Miller, who died in
1980.
In Los Angeles, Toki
formerly operated a gift shop
in the foyer of the Imperial
Gardens restaurant, where
she met the novelist who
eventually married her.
She also operated a club in
Little Tokyo and a pub in
Weller Court before returning
to Japan.
