Redress Foundation approves Japanese Canadian Chemainus mural
By K. SHIMIZU
VICTORIA, B.C. — The Vancouver Island Japanese Canadian Society
received word that the application for funding from the Japanese Cana
dian Redress Foundation of the Japanese Canadian mural in Chemainus
has been approved. Following the signing of a letter of agreement, the
Society has received the initial installment toward the $8,000 allotted
for the project. The rest will be forwarded when the subject matter of the
mural and the artist selected meets with the approval of the Foundation.
On June 4, 1990, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Isoki of Toronto and Mrs. K. Shi
mizu of Victoria met with two members of the Murals Society Board. Bill
Isoki was born in Chemainus in 1915 and had not been back since April
21, 1942. He is in touch with a number of former Chemainus residents,
and has been an invaluable contact person for this project. A decision
was made at this meeting to recommend the reproduction of the picture
of Scoutmaster Shige Yoshida with his first all Japanese Canadian 2nd
Chemainus troop which was organized in 1930.
It is hoped that a Japanese Canadian artist with ties to former resi
dents of Chemainus might be considered for this mural. The artist should
have experience in portraiture and in transferring the images to a large
wall. Inquiries can be directed to: Chemainus Festival of Murals Society,
P.O. Box 1311, Chemainus, B.C. V0R 1K0’ telephone (604) 246-4701.

TORONTO. — For nine days, from June 15 to June 23, the JC
Cultural Centre played host to over 20,000 people who visited our
Tokyo Pavilion in the 22nd edition of Metro International Caravan,
This year we were blessed with great weather for the opening
weekend. That set the tone for the entire week as attendance and
income exceeded both 1989 and 1988 figures throughout the
entire nine days. Once again our pavilion proved to be popular,
not only with the Caravan visitors, but with the press and media
as well. We received official visits from the Star, Sun, CFRB radio,

more popular, as all the
young families and grand
parents took part in all the
events organized. The action
at the bingo pavilion was en
joyed by one and all. Congra
tulations to all the winners
of the Fukubiki draw.
The fishing derby brought
out many devoted anglers
who tried their luck at catch
ing the longest fish of the
day. It was a youngster, Rob
bin Baba, who won the $25.00
prize along with a fishing
rod & reel for his 12" trout.
His name will be engraved on
the trophy donated by the
Toronto Chapter of the NAJC.
Congratulations Robbin!
The three-pitch tournament
is always the crowd-pleaser
with 12 teams signed up. All
the games were close and
after the last swing of the bat,
the Tyros emerged victori
ous. Congratulations Tyros,
and the JCCC says thank you
for donating the $25.00 prize
to the Centre.
The Share-the-Wealth draw
was a huge success, and it is
this feature that enables the
JCCP to achieve its break
even goal every year. Con
gratulations to this year's
winners.

articulate, eloquent, industri

and are both physically and

goes on to say that the third

True to prophecy, the Nik

started to enjoy their third

the attendees came from all

The guest list included Kaz

Master of

guests and after grace by Sue

served, catered by Ruth Ryoji.
Cabaret-style entertain
ment programme followed
with surprising talents re
cruited from Ushi-doshi peo

day song, written especially
for the occasion by Kay Fuji
wara opened and closed the
show, with a variety of fastpaced numbers filling the
programme. The hall vibrated
with enthusiastic applause.
Jazz Medley by Roy Miya

reminescent mood, and Ozzie
Fujiwara strutted the stage
as Charlie Chaplin, the rage
of the twenties.
Kay Fujiwara did the Char

“flappers” girls, Sumi Ya

their

TORONTO. According to
experts from the Chinese
Zodiac, Ushi-doshi people are
articulate, eloquent, industri
ous, skilled with hand work,
and are both physically and
mentally alert. The prophecy
goes on to say that the third
and last phase of an ox
person's life-span will be
the best ... if they live long
enough to experience it.
True to prophecy, the Nik
kei Ushi-doshi (1925) people
started to enjoy their third
and last phase with a birthday
celebration at the Toronto
Japanese Canadian Cultural
Centre on Sunday, July 15,
1990. Though held in Toronto,
the attendees came from all
over Canada.
The guest list included Kaz
and Yuriko Yoneda from Cal
gary; John and Yae Nakano
from Winnipeg; Tats and Kim
Sakauye, Mac and Kimi Ya

and Mary Nakashima from
Kingsville, Ontario; Roy and

Aya Kondo from Cambridge,
Ontario.
Master of
Ceremonies,
Noble Hori welcomed the
guests and after grace by Sue
Kai, a sumptuous Torontostyle Japanese buffet was
served, catered by Ruth Ryoji.
Cabaret-style entertain
ment programme followed
with surprising talents re
cruited from Ushi-doshi peo
ple and friends. A 65th Birth
day song, written especially
for the occasion by Kay Fuji
wara opened and closed the
show, with a variety of fastpaced numbers filling the
programme. The hall vibrated
with enthusiastic applause.
Jazz Medley by Roy Miya
shita set the audience into a
reminescent mood, and Ozzie
Fujiwara strutted the stage
as Charlie Chaplin, the rage
of the twenties.
Kay Fujiwara did the Char
leston in the attire of the
“flappers” girls, Sumi Ya
mamoto sang a popolar Ja

nica Band, which had its
origins in the ghost towns to
fill their youthful vitality
and which now functions as
a hobby to a group of six
original members, showed
their
self-taught
musical
talents. Harmonica players
included George Tsushima,
Noji Murase, Junji Ikeno,
Frank Usami, Ken Sugamori
and Ako Matsubayashi.

care what anyone says, I am
an American of Japanese an

By the very fact that we call

of the Asian ethnic groups
together and referred to every
one as “Asian Americans.”
I mean, just what is an
“Asian American”?
Now, it has gotten out of
hand another notch.
They refer to the group as
Asian Pacifies.
A story the other day, for
example, on a dinner party
being given for Warren Furu
tani, a member of the Los
Angeles City School Board,
referred to him as the “first
Asian Pacific” to hold the
post on the School Board.
j
In the old days, the story |
would have read that he “was
the first Japanese American.”
I am not quite sure why
they are lumping everyone
i
whose ancestry is linked to
one area of the world and
giving that area a title.
Why is it that these same
i
people who want to call all
i
those whose ancestry is link
ed to Asia and the Pacific
area as “Asian Pacifies” still
will refer to say, a person
from Nicaragua as a “Nica
raguan,” not a Central Amer
ican.”
And they don't call an
Englishman a European. They
call him either an Englishman
or a Britain.

So why is it they try so hard
to lump everyone from the
Asia and Pacific area as
“Asian Pacifies.”
If someone will give me an
explanation I shall be glad to
publish it.
And, even if the explana
tion is plausible, I still don't
want to be referred to as an
Asian Pacific.
Call me a Japanese Amer
ican or don't call me at all.
In Hawaii they refer to Ja
panese Americans as “AJAs”.
That stands for Americans of
Japanese Ancestry.
I like it. Especially when we
have to put a head on a story
for our newspaper.
AJA takes up less space
than spelling out Japanese
American or even Nisei.
In the meanwhile, those
who are behind the move to
lump all people of Asian
ancestry together with those
from the Pacific Islands,

of the Asian ethnic groups
together and referred to every
one as “Asian Americans.”
I mean, just what is an
“Asian American”?
Now, it has gotten out of
hand another notch.
They refer to the group as
Asian Pacifies.
A story the other day, for
example, on a dinner party
being given for Warren Furu
tani, a member of the Los
Angeles City School Board,
referred to him as the “first
Asian Pacific” to hold the
post on the School Board.
j
In the old days, the story |
would have read that he “was
the first Japanese American.”
I am not quite sure why
they are lumping everyone
i
whose ancestry is linked to
one area of the world and
giving that area a title.
Why is it that these same
i
people who want to call all
i
those whose ancestry is link
ed to Asia and the Pacific
area as “Asian Pacifies” still
will refer to say, a person
from Nicaragua as a “Nica

And they don't call an
Englishman a European. They
call him either an Englishman
or a Britain.

So why is it they try so hard
to lump everyone from the
Asia and Pacific area as
“Asian Pacifies.”
If someone will give me an
explanation I shall be glad to
publish it.
And, even if the explana
tion is plausible, I still don't
want to be referred to as an
Asian Pacific.
Call me a Japanese Amer
ican or don't call me at all.
In Hawaii they refer to Ja
panese Americans as “AJAs”.
That stands for Americans of
Japanese Ancestry.
I like it. Especially when we
have to put a head on a story
for our newspaper.
AJA takes up less space
than spelling out Japanese
American or even Nisei.
In the meanwhile, those
who are behind the move to
lump all people of Asian
ancestry together with those
from the Pacific Islands,
would do well to re-evaluate
their thinking.
Otherwise, they'd better
start calling Canadians “North
Americans,” together with
those who live in the United
States.
