departed Vancouver for tne
three-day tour to Vancouver
Island on August 11, 1990.
On the first day, the group
visited the Cumberland Japa
nese Canadian Cemetery and
the Greenwood Cemetery in
Port Alberni. Then, the group
headed for the Pacific Coast
of the Island, sight-seeing the
famous Long Beach and the
fishing village of Tofino. The
first night was spent in-Dcluelet, where only seven JC fam
ilies are residing. Sceneries
around the transversing Is
land roads were picturesque
and the bus trip was quite
comfortable.
On the second day, the
group visited the Ucluelet
Cemetery which was a new
addition to the annual Obon
Tour. There were a few JC
graves and two local JC fam
ilies waited for us. Then, vye
returned to Nanaimo and en
route to Nanaimo, the group
stopped at the Cathedral
Grove and Coombs. At the
Grove, the many first-timers
were fascinated with the
giant trees growing for many
generations and had fun,
shopping in the country-style
souvenir shop in Coombs.
The second night accom
modation was in Nanaimo.
Here, al I of the tour members
were invited to’ savory sea
food BBQ party, hosted by
Nanaimo's “Seven Potato
Society” at Bowen Park. The
BBQ party has become an an
nual event and in addition to
delicious BBQ salmon, clam 1
soup and many Japanese
dishes, unexpected reuinon

Nanaimo JCs and the tour
group were an exciting sur
prise added to the party.
Early in the morning of the
third day, the group visited
the Nanaimo Cemetery, and
then Cheriainus Cemetery
where the JC Memorial Mon
ument vill be erected next
year. L‘Ke other cemeteries,
the graveside Obon service
was held at the empty site in
Chemainus.
After the service, the peo
ple enjoyed a moment of

been set on August 10,1991.

will be reading on Sunday,
October 14th from 9 p.m.
Michiko Yamamoto is one
of Japan's most active and

successful contemporary au
thors. Her reputation is pri
marily based on her four col
lections of short stories, al
though she has also publish
ed a novel and two volumes
of poetry. Her first book
length collection to be pub
lished in English was Bettysan (1983).
Yamamoto often chronicles
the struggles of Japanese
women to contend with their
socially constrained and tra-

ditionally subservient roles.
Three of the four stories in
Betty-san depict Japanese
women dealing with the alie
nation of life in Australia.
In their lives, even ordinary
domestic objects take on
malevolent significance.
“Yamamoto's is a confined
world of women living in
quiet desperation. She evokes
the world with psychological
insight and literary polish,
however, that it reverberates
beyond its narrow limits.”

Is it
happening
again?
By GEORGE YOSHINAGA
LOS ANGELES. — I guess
it's a knee-jerk reaction
among Nisei to cringe when
ever we hear or read about
another major Japanese ac
quisition.
Especially since any Japa
nese purchase brings a lot
of negative reaction in the

U.S.
Take, for example, the pur
chase of the famed piece of
real estate on the Monterey
Peninsula which was reveal
ed recently.
;
A commentator on one of
the radio stations that I listen
to on the way into the office,
was making some smart-ass
remarks about the “Japanese
buying up everything.”
This may be true. They may
be buying up everything.
However, for every buyer,
there must be a seller.
Why is it okay to criticize
the Japanese buyer but not
the American seller?
I have yet to hear or read
that some greedy American,
seeking to make a handsome
profit “sold out the country.”
In the final analysis, I
guess this is another case
of “Japan bashing”.
And the fall-out drops on
most of us who are Japanese
Americans.
Isn't it ironic that for the
second time in the life time of
the Nisei, we are being, vic
timized by what the Japanese
in Japan happen to do.
